Great video. The river looks 1000 percent better than when the dam was there. It sure is a lot easier to take a dam down than to put it up.

salmon swim up river to spawn correct..this damn was built over 80 years ago correct..So obviously, unless these salmon are over 80 there have adapted to spawning lower than the dam...I mean, I saw it on the video of these people grabbing them north of the dam, I assume they were already south of it. So tear down a dam for what reason??? I would imagine all the silt from the blast killed off anything trying to breath in that water.

This makes me happy! I wish they would take down The Dalles Dam, Celilo falls needs to be restored, Its a major fishery and a natural wonder! All the other dams along the river can stay but The Dalles Dam needs to go!

I ran this river from BZ Corner to Husum Falls in my kayak with two strangers. It was the most athletic, scariest, most memorable experience of my life. I never ran anything that hard before, and have never run anything that hard since.

For all that we humans take from nature I get a warm fuzzy seeing that we know how to give back even more to the point that you would hardly have known that there was a large concrete hydroelectric Dam, that was in service for almost 100 years, on this on this very spot just the year before. Great job. Off to a good start. Keep up the green work.

Why didn't they save all that wood? That's about 250,000 board feet, plus the coffer dam. At $5.00 Bf. = $1,250,000

Nice that they have so much consideration to the residents who had a dock on the lake and now have just a muddy river bank so the power company could save some money. I'm so sick and disgusted at all the dam removals because of some fish and money. What a bunch of morons.

@EspionageWest Yes and maybe we'll ride horses to ,do you think these putzes were required to replace the lost energy with solar? or will more coal be burned.

  • @freetrailer4poor

I think they will regret they did this in 20 years. 7000 homes electrified gone. The easily could have built a cement fish ladder. Maybe the dam was about to fill anyways.

Yes, fish can "climb" fishladders and waterfalls, and no, those are not hatchery fish. This process should (slowly) restore the wild habitat and native fish populations. The rivers feeding the Columbia used to be full of fish like those you see in this video. If the habitat is restored, the native fish will outnumber and outdo the hatchery fish. I don't think there was any engineering done on the hatchery fish, though. They're actually weaker than the wild fish.
